New Lepto2 Vaccine Now Available at Great Western Animal Hospital

Leptospirosis isn’t just a scary-sounding word. It’s a serious, sometimes fatal disease in dogs and it’s been increasingly creeping into Western Sydney suburbs, including Pendle Hill and Greystanes. That’s why at Great Western Animal Hospital, we’re excited to now offer the new and improved Lepto2 vaccine for dogs.

But what is leptospirosis, and how is this new vaccine different? Let’s unpack what dog owners need to know.

What is Leptospirosis?

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection spread through the urine of infected animals, especially rats. Dogs can become infected by sniffing or licking contaminated water, soil or surfaces.

The disease can cause:

  • Kidney and liver failure

  • Internal bleeding

  • Jaundice

  • Vomiting and diarrhoea

  • Fever and lethargy

Sadly, it can be fatal and it can also be passed from dogs to humans. That makes it a serious public health concern.

Leptospirosis cases have been rising in parts of Sydney, especially after floods or heavy rains when rats are displaced and dogs are more likely to come into contact with contaminated areas.

Who Should Be Covered By This Vaccine?

If you live in Pendle Hill, Greystanes or anywhere in Sydney, your dog could be at risk. While not every dog is exposed to high-risk environments, we recommend the leptospirosis vaccine for all dogs, especially those who:

  • Walk in parks or bushland

  • Drink from puddles or creeks

  • Live in areas with high rat activity (urban or semi-rural)

If you're unsure, our vets are happy to assess your dog's risk level and help you decide what's best.

What Makes This Vaccine Different?

The new Lepto2 vaccine protects against two key strains of leptospirosis: Copenhageni and Australis. Previous vaccines covered only one strain (Copenhageni), meaning dogs were left vulnerable to the other.

Key benefits of the new vaccine:

  • Broader protection against Australia specific strains

  • Backed by the latest research from leading Australian vet schools

  • Same safety profile as previous vaccines

  • Recommended by the Australian Veterinary Association.

In other words, it’s a smarter, more complete safeguard for your furry family members.

Vaccination Schedule

To ensure strong protection, the Lepto2 vaccine is given as:

  • Two initial doses, 2-4 weeks apart

  • Then annual boosters to maintain immunity

Already had the older leptospirosis vaccine? Dogs still need two doses of Lepto2 to build full protection against both strains.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Like any vaccine, mild side effects such as sleepiness or a mild fever can occur. These usually resolve within 24 hours.
